Treasury of Meanings

Part 1. Calendula, Salt and the Measure of Help

Calendula — yellow flowers among greenery as an image of living help, recovery and measure
My favorite flower

Memory of Living Transmission

Calendula. My favorite flower.

In my youth, I was friends with Lidia Antonovna.
She was already over ninety, yet the past did not seem distant near her.
It was alive, domestic and human.
People, habits and old words remained in it.
Besides, family stories and craft skills lived there.
Such transmission of experience is not like a lesson.
Yet it is remembered for a whole life.

Once, Lidia Antonovna gave me an old book, perhaps from 1942.
Still, the exact title has already faded from memory.
In my view, the book was called “Senior Feldsher.”

I read it and, of course, immediately imagined myself a healer.
One section of the book spoke about calendula and its restorative properties.
After that, I sowed calendula in the yard and waited for flowers.
Then I decided to approach the matter seriously.

I made oil separately from the flowers.
I also prepared oil separately from the seeds.
At that time, I had a homemade device for living and dead water.
It consisted of the most elementary parts.
So to speak, it was assembled on the knee.
Yet the effect of that miraculous water was unimaginable.
But the main thing was not the device and not the oil.
The main thing was the state: I know everything and can do everything.
Calendula, salt and the measure of help were only beginning to form here.
Still, I did not understand this then.
It seemed enough to have a remedy, desire and courage.

Help and Young Certainty

The case did not take long to appear.
A co-worker’s husband scalded his leg while fishing.
He did not go home at once.
He was on a Ural motorcycle and hoped it would get easier.
However, it kept getting worse.
Only on the third day did he finally reach home.
He literally fell from the motorcycle at the gate.

Meanwhile, he flatly refused hospitalization.
They called me, and I was glad to play a sister of mercy.
Together with his wife, we did not leave his side.
We changed bandages, alternating dead water and living water.
We also used calendula oil from flowers and oil from seeds.

Truthfully, I do not know what exactly helped.
Maybe calendula helped, or living water, and quite possibly the oil.
Besides, clean bandages and his wife’s patience helped.
Most likely, everything worked together with our joint efforts.
Constant attention was especially important.
In the end, a miracle happened.
The leg healed, and even the skin recovered. Amazing!

Since then, calendula has been a special flower for me.
It carries a sunny mood.
Also, it preserved not only memory of help.
It also preserved memory of hope.
In essence, this is memory of young courage.
Such courage does not yet know measure.

Calendula, salt and the measure of help became an inner warning for me.
Help should not begin with self-confidence.
It should pass through responsibility.

Part 2. The Right to Help

The Boundary of Strength

After that, I gave up “healing” quite quickly.
Because helping a person is not simply wanting good.
For that, one needs a right and a measure of responsibility.
It is not enough to read an old book.
Nor is it enough to prepare oil and feel: “I can do everything.”

Sometimes Life gives a person a case not for pride.
It gives it for understanding a boundary.
Here Calendula, salt and the measure of help become more than success.
They become a lesson of sobriety.
Good without measure can become pressure.
In the same way, help without right can become interference.

The wish to save can close another person’s own path.
Therefore, true help begins not with strength, but with a question.
Do I have the right to interfere?
Is there a request here?
Do I have enough knowledge?
Is there more self-confidence in me than responsibility?
In fact, such questions do not extinguish living participation.
They cleanse it, and help becomes more precise, calm and honest.

Salt as the Measure of Interference

Lidia Antonovna left me not only a book, but also another story.

Her father was a tailor.
Earlier, tailors came to rich homes by recommendation.
They sewed for the whole family and could stay near people for long.
They saw daily life, heard conversations and noticed relationships.
Sometimes they became witnesses of small family dramas.

Once, such a tailor worked in the house of a large family.
That day, it was the younger daughter-in-law’s turn to cook lunch.
She was making borscht.
The tailor noticed how she salted it.
Then he saw something else.
The older daughter-in-law quietly came over and salted the borscht too.
At lunch, the mother-in-law began scolding the younger daughter-in-law.
The reason was the oversalted borscht.
Then the tailor intervened.
He said it was probably his fault.
I looked, and the younger one salted it.
Then I looked, and the older one salted it.
So I thought everyone in your house adds salt.

And I added salt too.

The Measure of Interference

At first glance, this is simply a funny story.
However, there is exact measure in the story.
The tailor did not directly accuse the older daughter-in-law.
He did not create a scandal.
Nor did he say roughly: “I saw everything.”
Softly and wittily, he changed the center of the situation.
He took the blame on himself.
Still, the truth became visible anyway.
Here the salt was not only in the borscht.
The salt was in the measure of interference.

Sometimes truth spoken directly can strike like a blunt axe.
At other times, it can be served differently.
Everyone will understand everything, but the space will not tear apart.
The tailor did not humiliate the younger daughter-in-law.
He did not expose the older one roughly.
Also, he did not let the mother-in-law fix injustice in place.
He simply added his own salt to the conversation.
So borscht, truth and resourcefulness met in one family story.
Calendula, salt and the measure of help received a second side there.
The first side is healing.
The second is precision of interference.

Part 3. A Family Joke

Memory That Lives

Since then, this phrase has lived in our family.
When I oversalt something, Kolya always asks: “Does everyone add salt here?”
Each time, not only borscht returns in this joke.
Memory of Lidia Antonovna returns.
Her tailor father, the old book and calendula return too.
Besides, the main meaning returns.
Even good, salt and help require measure.
Calendula teaches healing.
Salt teaches measure.
Life again shows a simple truth.
It is not enough to have a remedy.
One must understand when to apply it.

It is important to know how to apply it.
It is especially important to feel with what right.
Calendula, salt and the measure of help are not only a memory.
They are a small inner law.
It says: help if there is a right.
Speak if there is measure.
Act if there is responsibility inside.

Journey of Meanings. Three Directions of Experience

In the Journey of Meanings, this story can open in different ways.

One person will see calendula and choose the path of healing.
Another will notice salt and go toward the theme of measure.
A third will hear the tailor’s story and see the power of soft truth.

There is no wrong choice here.
Each entrance shows its own layer of experience.
If one chooses healing, the question of help opens.
Choosing measure reveals the boundary of interference.
Choosing soft truth leads the path to responsibility of speech.

Thus the Treasury of Meanings becomes not an archive of the past.
It becomes a place of living choice.
Past experience does not lie as dead weight.
It opens as meaning, warning and a point of new assembly.

That is why Calendula, salt and the measure of help remain in memory.
This is not simply an incident from youth.
It is a chronicle of how good learns to be precise.

Calendula helps remember healing.
Salt returns one to measure.
The tailor’s story shows the power of careful interference.
Life again reminds us that help requires more than heart.
It requires right, responsibility and an exact moment.
Calendula, salt and the measure of help connect three simple things.

A remedy.
Measure.
Human participation.

And if all three enter alignment, help becomes living.
For the game, I would give three directions from this page:

Heal the trace
Find the measure
Speak the soft truth
